Ever wondered what’s happening inside a beehive?

Suit up, look closer and discover the living colony behind the honey. A guided apiary visit makes room for questions and hands-on observation.

What to expect

A whole world in one hive.

A beekeeping class offers a closer look at a living colony. Classroom explanations can introduce how a hive is organized, while a guided inspection connects those ideas to the frames in front of you. Participants may learn to recognize brood, stored pollen and honey, and see how a beekeeper uses the tools of the trade. What you see depends on the colony, conditions and the particular session.

01

Understand the colony.

A hive contains more than honey. An instructor can explain the roles of bees and point out brood, pollen and stored honey on a frame. Finding a particular bee is not guaranteed.

02

Connect the tools to the task.

A guided inspection introduces the use of hive frames and beekeeping equipment while giving you someone to ask. Follow the actual class instructions; a discovery article is not practical beekeeping training.

Before choosing

A few useful questions.

  • What ages can attend, and does each accompanying adult need a paid seat?
  • Are suitable protective suits and gloves available for every participant?
  • What clothing, footwear and preparation does the organizer require?
  • What are the participation requirements and arrangements for sting/allergy concerns?
  • What are the weather, cancellation and rescheduling policies?

Honey tasting, harvesting honey or taking honey home are not promised by the featured class description. The apiary class address differs from the Saturday farm-stand address.
